Benefits for attendees

According to Tibetan Buddhist tradition, most serious practitioners request oral transmissions of the texts they are studying. An oral transmission plants the blessings of the text being transmitted in the mindstreams of the people in attendance. These blessings help us transform our knowledge into actual practice, and eventually fruition into realisations and attainments.

In the case of this Lamrim prayer, the oral transmission bestows blessings stemming from the original author and the great lineage masters who came after him. This is so that our Lamrim preparatory practices are empowered, successful and will bear results.

It also blesses our mindstream with the powerful potential to understand, realise and practise the Lamrim successfully. Therefore, it is highly recommended for anyone who is striving to learn and practise the Lamrim, and for those who teach the Lamrim.

The Lamrim prayer and preparatory practices

The Lamrim prayer titled An Ornament for the Throats of the Fortunate was composed by Jampel Lhundrub of Dagpo, a great lamrim lineage master who was one of H.H. Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche’s principal teachers. This prayer was highly recommended by Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche as it contains an extensive recitation encompassing the entire Lamrim preparatory practices. It is extensive, powerful and has many blessings.

The translation of this prayer can be found at the back of Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche’s Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand. The oral transmission is the auspicious recitation of this text by the lama, His Eminence Kensur Rinpoche Jetsun Lobsang Phende, to plant powerful blessings of this prayer in the mindstreams of all present.

The Lamrim preparatory practices are meant to set a virtuous motivation, purify obscurations, accumulate merits and invoke the blessings of the lineage masters before entering into a formal meditation session on the Lamrim topics. If the preparatory practices are done well, it ensures that our study and meditation on the Lamrim results in a steady stream of blessings and attainments.

The Six Lamrim Preparatory Practices

  1. Cleaning your room and arranging the symbols of enlightened body, speech and mind.
  2. Obtaining offerings without deceit and arranging them beautifully.
  3. Adopting the seven-featured sitting position of Vairochana on a comfortable seat, after which you take refuge, develop bodhichitta, and so on, while “in an especially virtuous frame of mind.”
  4. Petitioning the merit field.
  5. Offering the seven-limbed prayer and a world mandala — practices that contain all the key points of accumulation of merit and self-purification.
  6. Further petitions, which follow oral Lamrim instructions, made in order to further transform our mind.
