Restoring (Zong) Rinpoche

For many who saw images of His Holiness Kyabje Zong Rinpoche’s statue, there seemed to be no doubt that the statue was destroyed forever. Water dripping from the tenants above Kechara House 1 had fallen on to the delicate statue made of dirt, causing it to crumble and fall apart.

Badly damaged statue when it first arrived at KSA

Even the face of H.H. Kyabje Zong Rinpoche was cracked

The seeming irreparable state of the statue was upsetting to His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche – although an auspicious plant grew from Zong Rinpoche’s right knee, there was a very real possibility that the rare and perfect image of his root guru might now be lost forever.

Before and after the old paint was removed

It is therefore a testament to the skill of Kechara Saraswati Arts, and their fabulous artist Lili Ng that Zong Rinpoche’s image has been restored to such a high standard.

Lili began by removing the old paint which required a very careful touch – with time, the paint had moulded itself onto the body of the statue so removing it could destroy the statue even further.

Filling in the cracks with white plaster

She then filled the cracked parts with white plaster, before ever-so-gently sanding it down to match the rest of the statue. Lili was even able to reattach and repair Zong Rinpoche’s fingers, which were hanging by wires when the statue first arrived in KSA!

Zong Rinpoche’s image will soon be ready for people to pay their respects to – the final step is to paint the base coat with white acrylic paint, and sand it to make it smooth, before repainting the statue.

As Tsem Rinpoche previously explained, the image of a holy master renowned for his sharp intellect and debating skill has the power to bless us due to the compassionate mind that he generated all of his life…so watch this space for further information on when you can come to see the fully-restored Zong Rinpoche for yourself!
