The Parinirvana of H.E. the 25th Tsem Rinpoche

Today with a heavy heart, we share the sad news of the passing into parinirvana of His Eminence Kyabje Tsem Tulku Rinpoche Tenzin Zopa Yonten Gyatso of Gaden Monastery and Kechara Buddhist Organisation.

His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche was a world-renowned Buddhist teacher, the 25th incarnation from a long line of Indian, Nepali and Tibetan Buddhist masters dating back to over 2,500 years ago. He was the founder of the Kechara Buddhist Organisation headquartered in Malaysia, a prolific author of commentaries, discourses and books on Buddhism, and a beloved spiritual guide to many disciples around the world. He dedicated his entire life to the practice and proliferation of Buddhism especially through the digital world.

His Eminence had been in poor health for a number of months. Previously on the advice of His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche, His Eminence Drubwang Lama Gangchen Rinpoche, and other eminent masters of our lineage, many sacred pujas and longevity rituals were performed for His Eminence’s health. Due to the blessings of these prayers, His Eminence had been recovering until recently.

At 9.49pm on September 4th, 2019 according to the Western calendar and on the 6th day of the seventh month of the Earth Boar Year of the Tibetan Lunar Calendar, H.E. Tsem Rinpoche concluded his earthly enlightened activities and entered into clear light. From the moment of his passing until the present time, H.E. Tsem Rinpoche has remained in a state of thukdam (clear light death meditation).

When H.E. Tsem Rinpoche emerges from thukdam, we will notify all concerned of the time and place to pay respects to his holy body. We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support during this difficult time from members of the public, lamas and friends from around the world.

With the imparting of this very sad news of H.E. Tsem Rinpoche’s passing, we request students, friends and devotees both from the East and the West to fulfil all the wishes of His Eminence Kyabje Tsem Tulku Rinpoche Tenzin Zopa Yonten Gyatso by continuing to engage in Dharma activities and benefiting beings.

Prayer for the Swift Return of H.E. the 25th Tsem Rinpoche

Abiding in a state of wisdom and compassion, Bodhisattvas are highly attained beings who have developed the spontaneous wish to always be of benefit to others. For this reason, they pray to be reborn in difficult circumstances, or in an environment where they can absorb the suffering of sentient beings. This is a prayer that His Eminence the 25th Tsem Rinpoche repeatedly made in his previous lives, which can be traced back to a direct disciple of Lord Buddha Shakyamuni himself.

Born on October 24, 1965, His Eminence took rebirth to fulfil the spiritual responsibilities of his previous lives and to uphold the tradition of Buddha’s teachings. Having fulfilled the role of his present incarnation, he passed into parinirvana on September 4, 2019.

Highly attained beings will return if sincere requests are made. Compelled by compassion, they will not turn away if they see a need for them to return. To this end, on September 5, 2019, the king of our lineage, His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche composed a Prayer for the Swift Return of His Eminence the 25th Tsem Rinpoche.

It is now vital for all disciples, monasteries, friends around the world, and upholders of the lineage to recite this prayer and make heartfelt and fervent requests for His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche to swiftly return in an unmistaken incarnation to continue his enlightened activities in this earthly realm. The prayer should be recited strongly and often, and incorporated into your daily practices.

His Eminence has previously expressed that one of his favourite verses within the Lama Chopa is:

Even if I must remain in the fiery hells of Avici for the sake of one sentient being alone, we seek your blessings to complete the perfection of joyous effort to strive with compassion for Supreme Enlightenment and not be discouraged.

Where most would fear to tread, His Eminence’s brand of fearless compassion reaches out to sentient beings. So while we may not be in Avici, there is no denying that His presence is still very much needed in this suffering realm, as a source of compassion, hope and enlightenment for all sentient beings, great and small.

Join us in creating the causes for His Eminence to return among us in this realm and once again continue his deeds in a new perfect form that is for the benefit of all.
