Guide to Buddhist Baptism for Children

As parents, we always try to give the very best to our children until they become adults. We give them love, education and protection, and hope that they grow up to become successful and decent human beings.

One of the best ways to do this is by teaching our children Dharma from a young age. When we do this, we plant something inside their minds that will lead them to real happiness — not only in this life, but in future lives too. The best gift we can give our children is the gift of Dharma, to enrich their mind and soul.

What is Buddhist baptism?

The Children’s Buddhist Baptism is a special ceremony conducted by our Sangha and Pastors to bless the minds of the young and grant them protection. It is open to newborns, infants, children, and teenagers up to the age of 17.

During the ceremony, prayers and rituals specially composed by His Eminence the 25th Tsem Rinpoche are performed to invoke the energy of the Second Buddha, Lama Tsongkhapa — an embodiment of Chenrezig (compassion), Manjushri (wisdom), and Vajrapani (spiritual power). This prevents negative interferences and increases good qualities in the child.

Benefits of the Buddhist baptism ceremony

The benefits of children’s baptism are numerous and extend well beyond one lifetime.

  • Your child formally becomes a Buddhist. They come under the protection of the Three Jewels — Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha.
  • Your child’s mind receives the seeds of compassion, wisdom, and skilful means. This creates positive imprints for them to grow into a good and happy person.
  • Your child is accompanied by the blessings and protection of the Three Jewels throughout every stage of their early life.

General guidelines

Parents interested in the baptismal ceremony are required to attend a briefing. The briefing explains the preparations required, the prayers involved, and provides an opportunity to address any questions you may have.

Participation in the briefing is a prerequisite, as parents will be guiding the children for some time until the children fully understand the prayers and can practise on their own.

Additional preparations

  • Dress code. Children are advised to dress in all white. Parents and children will be directed to a special seating area, where they can sit together as a group. The detailed procedure for the ceremony will be explained to parents on the day itself.

  • Offerings to the Three Jewels. To mark their official entry into Buddhism, each child will be guided to make offerings right after the ceremony. These consist of a Lama Tsongkhapa tsatsa or statue, a kuyong (token monetary offering), a candle, and a khata (traditional silk offering scarf), which are offered at the altar on the day of the baptism ceremony.

Watch the videos below to learn more — including what to prepare, how the ceremony works, and what you can do after the ceremony to further nurture the blessings your child has received.

When is the ceremony held?

At Kechara, the Children’s Buddhist Baptism is conducted annually in conjunction with Wesak Day for auspiciousness. On occasion, it may be conducted on other auspicious dates. If you are interested to have your child baptised into Buddhism, please reach out to us by email or WhatsApp. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have and keep you informed of upcoming ceremony dates.
