Make your problem a challenge

Think you have problems? Feel like you’ve got all the time in the world to do something? Think nothing’s ever going to change, and everything will be alright?

Maybe it’s time to do a little introspective re-evaluation. After all, it’s a matter of the mind, and problems are only problems according to our perspective.

With the right perspective, problems become challenges to be overcome…and Philippe Croizon has certainly conquered many of them. After an electrical accident sixteen years ago, all of Philippe’s limbs were amputated. Imagine having had full use of your body for 26 years, before it is taken away from you.

Did he let it stop him? No!

Instead, Philippe recently swam the English channel, an already arduous and treacherous journey for a full-bodied individual.

Taking over 14 hours to cover the 34-kilometre journey, Philippe’s time might have been more than double the fastest swimmer on record. However, on completing this feat, he joins just 1155 swimmers to have made successful crossings.

So the next time we find that we can’t get motivated to do something, perhaps we should think again. Think about the incredible karmic conditions that have come together to result in our intact mental and physical faculties, so that we may use what we have to bring happiness to ourselves and others. And then contemplate on impermanence, thinking that at any moment our world can be changed forever, and life can made so much more difficult for us…

…but only if we think of it that way.
