A celebration of the global launch of His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche’s iconic book, Gurus for Hire, Enlightenment for Sale, was hosted by Terry and Joan Foo Mahony at the exquisite 11, Cadogan Gardens in the heart of London. As Adviser to Kechara Media and Publications, Joan Foo Mahony had invited her personal friends to celebrate this milestone with the KMP crew and several Kechara liaisons and friends.

While a party outwardly appears to be steeped in samsara, the motivation for having this party was purely Dharma. Joan Foo Mahony wished to introduce and share with her good friends about her Guru, H.E. Tsem Rinpoche, his teachings, her commitment to Dharma and also the various Kechara members.

Among the vast and varied guest list were Mr. Martin Barrow, Mr. Francois de Witt and Ms. France Berveiller Choa, who so kindly gave endorsements for the book and had flown into London especially for the launch; celebrity shoe couturier Dato’ Jimmy Choo; the Malaysian High Commission’s press officer, Mr. Revi Pillai; Mr. and Mrs. MacKay from Kensington Palace and The Star’s London correspondent Mr. Choi Tuck Wo, who also interviewed members of KMP and Tsem Ladrang for a feature that he will be doing about the book and launch.

Our very own Apprentice Liaison Bill Keith turned every corner of the Victorian mansion into something magical; marrying candles, flowers and Buddha statues with the uber-luxe, rich, candle-lit interiors of the rooms. Lama Tsongkhapa, Tara and Heruka were all there to celebrate this book which will send a new wave of blessings to London and beyond!

Not only did Bill decorate the rooms, he also transformed the KMP girls and our fashionable Liaison Ruby Khong, who showed up in Bill’s stunning, award-winning creations. The ladies transcended elegance in traditional kebayas with modern twists and intricate beadword. Sexy, subtle, professional, beautiful – what’s not to love about Kechara’s daring twists in their Dharma work!

The highlight of the evening was Joan’s brief but meaningful welcome address, which introduced Rinpoche, Dharma and her work with KMP to all her friends. Though the speech was short, Joan was full of laughter and that special energy that can come only from her deep and wonderful commitment to bringing the joy of Rinpoche’s teachings to others. Her concluding line – “Never say you can’t, because that isn’t the real you speaking” – brought everyone in the room back to the heart of Rinpoche’s teachings: to be the best person you can be.

Head Liaison of Tsem Ladrang, JP Thong, also delivered a speech to give a brief introduction to Rinpoche and his teachings. Drawing on personal experiences, JP especially shared how he and Ladrang Associate Liaison / Director of Fundraising May Phng were both inspired to commit to working with Rinpoche, to bring Dharma to the world.

Most guests left the evening beaming with a copy of Gurus for Hire and a specially created “Gurus for Hire” gift bag which contained a biography of His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche and a beautifully-framed quotation, extracted from the book. Little pieces of Enlightenment are now flying around London and, we hope, uplifting hearts. Here’s to many more book launches to go global!
