Work Starts on the Fish Pond

Today (June 1, 2015), work began on the fish pond at Kechara Forest Retreat! Located just behind H.E. Tsem Rinpoche’s cabin, those driving or walking along Kechara Drive will be able to view the pond. Overseeing this project is JP Thong, the head of Tsem Ladrang (Tsem Rinpoche’s private office).

As with all works throughout Kechara, Rinpoche is very personally interested in this project. The fish pond was designed by Rinpoche himself, who visited the site to measure how large the pond should be. Rinpoche also visited many offices, hotels and pet shops to check out existing fish ponds and get ideas for how to give fish the best possible living conditions.

The fish pond is also another manifestation of Rinpoche’s care for animals. Already in Kechara Forest Retreat is a 4000sq ft aviary that is home to many birds rescued from a life of neglect and abuse. This aviary is currently being expanded to include a Recovery Aviary, for birds who are unable to assimilate into the general population or who need their own space for recovery from illness. I have always been an advocate of saving the lives of animals. I have been doing this for many years. The joy and satisfaction derived from seeing animals free, happy and unharmed is beyond words for me. I have been promoting this practice to many students. I have personally gone to different parks and lakes in this area to inspect if it was ok for us to release fish.
