Chinese New Year is one of the most important celebrations in the world. Traditionally celebrated to welcome spring and as thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest, it is that one time of the year when everyone goes home to reconnect with family and friends over feasts of delicacies and much merriment.

Steeped in tradition and culture, no matter where it is celebrated, one of the common practices for Chinese all over the world is to visit temples to pray for year-long blessings and for a smooth, successful year ahead. Celebrating this tradition the Tibetan Buddhist way, Kechara is hosting the first ever Grand Dorje Shugden Puja in Kechara Forest Retreat to invite showers of blessings for an excellent Lunar Year of the Fire Rooster.

The highlight of the two-day event is the Dorje Shugden Grand Puja held at 10am on each day, complete with musical Tibetan chanting and the playing of ritual instruments such as long horns, Tibetan clarinets, cymbals and drums. And on the evening of the first day at 6pm, an ‘increase’ fire puja will be conducted by ritual masters and Tibetan Buddhist sangha. This fire puja is a powerful traditional Tibetan ritual that calls upon the power of Gyenze, an emanation of Dorje Shugden, to increase wealth, prosperity, resources, life force, blessings, merits and abundance of everything that is good and beneficial.

Various other activities have been lined up for this special occasion including traditional lion dance performances, Dharma talks, meditation sessions, sutra writing, line dancing, children’s activities and colouring competitions, magic shows, free health check ups and much more. Complimentary vegetarian lunch will be provided and many booths will be available for visitors to browse, eat, drink and invite wealth-enhancing items.

A blessed string will be given to everyone who attends the event and free gifts will be distributed to the first 100 registered guests on each day.

Dorje Shugden in Brief

An emanation of Manjushri, Dorje Shugden is the Protector of the Gelug lineage who came into being about 350 years ago. A relatively “young” protector compared to the 600-year old Setrap, Dorje Shugden is known to be swift to come to a practitioner’s aid either to help remove obstacles or to help fulfil wishes, especially virtuous ones.
