Creating The Causes For Real Dharma Practice

H.H. Zong Rinpoche attends the teachings & initiation

Imagine if you will, an entire gathering of Sangha, receiving precious teachings from one of the few great masters who remain with us at this time. They spend 7 days absorbing the words of wisdom that come forth, which they will later contemplate upon and put into practice. Following the week’s worth of teachings, a Manjushri initiation is then conferred upon the assembled high lamas and monks…

7 days of teachings & a Manjushri initiation, sponsored by H.E. Tsem Rinpoche

This is not an imaginary scenario, rather, this is exactly what happened just last week. The erudite teacher was H.E. Kensur Konchok Tsering Rinpoche, the audience was the Sangha of Gaden Shartse Monastery and the teachings were sponsored by none other than H.E. Tsem Rinpoche. Read the full article here.

But why do all this?

Creating Real Dharma Practitioners

Sponsoring teachings & initiations for the Sangha benefits the monastery greatly. From the ranks of Sangha will arise eminent teachers & lineage holders who will continue to pass down the same teachings from generation to generation, and bring benefit to many. In this way, these teachings will remain in the world for a very long time. In fact, it is through these types of discourses that Buddhism has stayed alive up till today.

Imagine, these precious teachings were given to all the Sangha of Gaden Shartse and we were the cause of that! We create the merits not just to have a large building where empty teachings are given. Instead we actually create the merits for real Dharma practitioners to arise, who will actually practice those teachings and gain attainments.

Therefore, by sponsoring these teachings and initiations, we create the causes for Tsem Kacho Ling, our future retreat centre, to be a place where the Dharma is transmitted and people actually practice.

Requesting For Teachings

Another point of note: This is the first time that H.E. Kensur Konchok Tsering Rinpoche has given teachings and initiations to the entire Sangha of Gaden Shartse. Although Kensur Rinpoche is a highly qualified lama, prior to this he had only taught in the privacy of his own ladrang, out of the deepest respect for the senior Kensurs (Abbot Emeritus) of the monastery, H.E. Lati Rinpoche and H.E. Kensur Jampa Yeshe Rinpoche. (By tradition, the younger Kensur does not give teachings unless permission is granted by the senior Kensur.)

Therefore, Ven. Kating Rinpoche making repeated requests for this series of teachings and the Manjushri initiation has, in a manner of speaking, started H.E. Kensur Konchok Tsering Rinpoche’s teaching career on a bigger scale.

Repaying The Kindness of Malaysians

H.E. Tsem Rinpoche wishes to repay the kindness of many Malaysians who have generously helped and supported Gaden Shartse in the past. The ultimate way to do this, of course, is by spreading the incomparable Dharma in Malaysia.

Creating the causes for others to practice the Dharma

However, in a country where mass Buddhist consciousness is rare and real Dharma practitioners are few, spiritual seekers often do not have the merits to actually practice, change and transform. Because prior to this, no one has created the merits for them to practice the Dharma!

Therefore, as one of the Dharma pioneers in this beautiful country, H.E. Tsem Rinpoche sponsors these teachings and initiations in order to create the merits & causes for people here in Malaysia to truly practice.

Remember, it is through the kindness of Malaysians that Rinpoche is able to sponsor such activities in the monastery! Therefore, the merits collected also come to Malaysia!

In Conclusion

“To be able to listen to the Dharma and realize that it is personal advice requires merits.

Do not be discouraged when you work, teach, care and share with others selflessly and without motive, and there appears to be no result. Because there will be results!

The merits collected from your efforts create the causes for more people to change.

Your struggle to give up your attachments such as work, money, family, etc. creates the merits for other people just like you to do the same in the future. You create the merits and positive energy for other people to let go of their attachments!

By absorbing disappointments, continuing to care for others and using skillful methods to change their minds, we create merits for others. In the future, we can affect other people’s minds faster and better.

Therefore, when we cannot affect another person’s mind to transform for the better in this life, we should have a Bodhi mind and pray to be able to affect them positively in a future life.

Our efforts now may not transform others’ minds immediately but it will definitely plant seeds for that to happen in the future. These seeds, or Dharmic imprints are the latent karma that will open at a later date.”

(As spoken by H.E. Tsem Rinpoche)

Immediately following the long life puja

Ven. Kating Rinpoche, with assistants, was able to distribute part of the Manjushri initation tsok to the blind children of mundgod on H.E. Tsem Rinpoches behalf.
