A Special Thanksgiving Event at Kechara Forest Retreat

Saturday, 15 October 2016 coincided with the 15th day of the 9th month of the Chinese Lunar calendar, an auspicious day and also the birthday of His Holiness Trijang Choktrul Rinpoche.

This very blessed day also witnessed a special Thanksgiving Lama Chopa Puja and Recitation of the King of Prayers for sponsors of  the ‘LAMPS FOR LIFE’ programme – Kechara’s unique programme designed to facilitate the practice of light offerings to the Buddhas, by Kechara members and Dharma practitioners.

Why was this occasion so special? It’s special because sponsors of these highly beneficial ‘LAMPS FOR LIFE’ have individually succeeded in making over 1 million light offerings to the Buddhas since they joined the programme a few years ago. In the Treasury of Bodhisattvas Sutra, it says, “Offering 10,000 bright lamps [has the power to] confess and extinguish hosts of negative karma and defilements.” What more, the offering of 1 million lamps.

And, at Wisdom Hall in Kechara Forest Retreat, when one offers light to Lama Tsongkhapa, one also simultaneously makes offerings to Buddha Shakyamuni and Dorje Shugden through the strategic positioning of these Buddha statues. ‘LAMPS FOR LIFE’ has made it possible for Dharma practitioners to engage in one of the Five Preliminary Practices, which is making 100,000 light offerings to the Buddhas.

After members and guests settled in, Datuk May Phng, President of Kechara House gave a welcome speech to formally commemorate the occasion which was especially meaningful as it was also Datuk’s birthday.

Attendees had the opportunity as well to listen to a penetrative Dharma teaching by Pastor David Lai who explained the benefits of making light offerings to the Buddhas, as taught by H.E. the 25th Tsem Rinpoche. At the conclusion of the talk, everyone was invited to join the sponsors in making their respective one millionth butterlamp offering, and the Lama Tsongkhapa area was instantly aglow with merits generated from the blessed activity.

After that, the Kechara Puja Team led by Pastor Tat-Ming commenced the melodious chant of the holy Lama Chopa, followed by the recitation of the King of Prayers to seal the merits from the making of these light offerings for participants of ‘LAMPS FOR LIFE’.

At the conclusion of the prayers, all present were invited to Dukkar Apartments for a vegetarian buffet and refreshments from Kechara Oasis Vegetarian Restaurant. Many lingered to catch up with friends and renew their connection with Kechara Forest Retreat. For first timers to KFR, it was a treat to soak in the energy of this holy land embraced by nature.

As Albert Einstein once said, “Darkness is the absence of light”. So, we offer light to the Buddhas and as a result we receive illumination of our own minds, free of dullness and obscurations.

May the merits of all who created the causes for many others to make light offerings to the Buddhas bring them even closer to Dharma and higher practices.
