If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one. ~ Mother Teresa

Kechara Food Bank was launched on 23 May 2012 by Yang Berhormat Dato’ Seri Nazri Aziz, who was then the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department. The initiative to start the Food Bank was from Team Kechara Soup Kitchen (KSK) from the regular items being dropped off at our doorstep by anonymous donors.

It was with the support from friends, media, press and publications that much public awareness was created on the good works of Kechara’s community initiatives which resulted in donors bringing to us basic provisions like rice, cooking oil and other household essential items. Kechara Food Bank was created mainly to serve the marginalised community by offering assistance with basic household necessities.

Our soup kitchen building in Jalan Barat, off Jalan Imbi is used as a collection centre and every week our van will deliver these much needed provisions to several charitable homes and poor families in the Klang Valley, for a start.

Since its inception, six non-governmental organisations received 50 bags of 10kg rice each, while ten needy families received 30 bags of 10kg rice each along with cooking oil, biscuits and soya sauce. All of Malaysia’s major media came to support this very noble cause, including Astro, TV3, The Star, New Straits Times, Malay Mail, Utusan, Berita Harian, Sin Chew Daily, Nanyang Siang Pau, Guang Ming Daily, China Press and Oriental Daily which continue to offer their support.

Amongst some of the beneficiaries of the Kechara Food Bank are non-governmental organisations, such as:

  • Pertubuhan Kebajikan Anak Yatim Mary – Sister Malar
  • Agathians Shelter – Mr. Sivabalan
  • Community Excel Services – Mr. Lawrence Chong
  • Surau Jamal Al-Surur – Ustaz Abdullah
  • Persatuan Kanak-Kanak Istimewa Kajang, Selangor – Ms Kong Lan Lee
  • Persatuan Rumah Amal Murni Kajang, Selangor – Mr Soo Chan Sen

We have grown since then and we currently serve more than 100 households around Klang Valley, up to Nilai and Seremban. We have recently partnered with SOGO Departmental Store Kuala Lumpur to start a Food Bank collection in SOGO itself.
