Distribution from our Soup Kitchen

Monday 28th March – Friday 1st April 2011 @ 1100 to 1300 hrs

A total of 650 packets of food were distributed from our soup kitchen this week.

It was an eventful week, beginning with a client who came to the soup kitchen seeking assistance for his alcoholism. He wished to be admitted into an alcohol rehabilitation centre. The team asked him to wait in the kitchen so that they could take him to a rehabilitation centre after the kitchen’s daily operations were done. However, he left unnoticed soon after that and never returned.

The team were also spoke to Ah Keong, who asked them to give a packet of food to a mentally challenged man who lives near to him. According to Ah Keong, the man moved into the area about two weeks ago; Ah Keong has asked him to come to KSK, but the man has always ignored him.

Food distribution from the kitchen went smoothly throughout the week.

Distribution from our Mobile Soup Kitchen

Monday 28th March – Friday 1st April 2011 @ 1330 to 1430 hrs

We distributed 298 packets of food in Kampung Bellamy this week.

KSK used to serve a visually impaired client, but the team have not seen him in some time. The other residents of Kampung Bellamy do not know of his current whereabouts. However, his absence is not so much of a surprise, since the client sometimes goes to Brickfields to spend a week at a church, before returning the following week.

An elderly client immediately began to eat after collecting his packet of food from us. He told volunteers that he was very hungry because he had not had anything to eat since the morning. When asked why, the man revealed that he does not have much money left as he has been sick for the past week, and unable to collect recyclables every day to survive.

Mobile food distribution went smoothly throughout the week.

Midnight Rounds

Saturday 2nd April 2011 @ 2130 hrs

68 volunteers distributed 690 packets of food to our clients during this night.

Master Chefs from Doubletree of Hilton KL prepared 500 packets of food for the homeless and less privileged in Kuala Lumpur. Doubletree of Hilton KL was the fourth of many hotels and restaurants participating in this community project undertaken by the founder of Malaysia International Gourmet Festival Dato’ Steve Day.

KSK President, Dato’ Ruby Khong was present at our soup kitchen together with chefs from Doubletree to distribute food to our walk-in clients. In the meantime, KSK volunteers distributed the remaining packets of food to clients on the usual rounds.

It was an eventful night over in Cahaya Suria, when the team there realised they had not enough wet food for everyone. Just as they were about to arrange for more, they came across a gentleman by the name of Rudy who was also distributing food in the area. He decided to give the team his remaining 11 packets of food, and said that he would like to work more closely with KSK. KSK Committee Member Wong Kwok Wai later arrived with extra packets of food to help feed clients who had not received their share.

The team covering Petaling Street met with an Indian lady during their rounds. According to their team leader, she appeared to be in her 20s to 30s, and suffering from a slight mental disability. The team have been monitoring her situation for the past few weeks and found her to be not trusting of them.

The Dang Wangi team’s leader met Mohd. Ghani, a regular client whom they have not seen for almost a year. His leg was injured due to an accident he suffered about a year ago. The team asked whether he required medical attention but Mohd. Ghani politely declined their offer, saying that he had been going to the hospital for treatment.

The team also reported that one of their regular clients Amran has requested KSK to mass-produce rubber friendship bands bearing the Kechara Soup Kitchen name. Amran said he and his fellow friends on the streets would like to show their appreciation by wearing it.

Food distribution went smoothly and ended around 12:30am.

Evening Rounds

Sunday 3rd April 2011 @ 1700 hrs

Nine volunteers distributed 70 packets in the areas of Brickfields and Petaling Jaya this evening.

The Brickfields team found Mr Ronny lying on the floor in a very weak condition. When asked how he was doing, Mr Ronny replied that he was fine. After a short conversation, Mr Ronny agreed to go into a shelter home. Arrangement has been made to send him for an interview. Regular clients “Chicken” and Ravi were nowhere to be seen; the team left the food with a cobbler who knows them.

Elsewhere, the team covering Old Klang Road met up with Mr Fadhil who was hanging around the divider near a traffic junction. It has been months since our volunteers have seen Fadhil but they were unable to spend more time catching up with him as their car was blocking traffic.

In Petaling Jaya, the team went to visit Artist and found him to be in a jovial mood. Artist’s place is still very clean, which the regular volunteers were very happy to see. They have been trying to clean up some parts of Artist’s place for the past weeks so that he has a cleaner place to sleep, rather than on rotten packets of food scattered all over the corridor.

Food distribution went smoothly.
