Midnight Rounds

Saturday 24th July 2010 @ 2130 hrs

50 volunteers distributed 476 packets of food tonight.

Sandra, Jacy and Irene helped with the packing but did not join the rounds.

Due to the recent rain, several clients complained of having flu and asked for eucalyptus oil. Many were suffering from itches and rashes caused by fungal infections, so anti-fungal medication was given to them. Once word spread that we were distributing them, more clients showed up requesting for anti-fungal medicines.

We met Raphael whom we haven’t seen for a while. He became homeless about a year ago when he ran away from home after his parents divorced. The 21-year old is now working in a restaurant as a cook, where he is earning RM1,500 per month with a room in a hostel provided to him. He has been working for the past six months and came back to where he used to sleep at night to visit some of the street friends he made. We were very happy for him.

We also came across a man who was sleeping in Cahaya Suria area with a heavily-bandaged toe. The 52-year old was injured while working on a construction site. When the construction site is closed on weekends, he is forced to sleep on the streets. He told us that he left home after falling out with his half-siblings and has never returned since. He has no savings and could not care less about his later years; he just plans to live from day to day, until he dies.

Food distribution went smoothly without any untoward incidents.

Evening Rounds

Sunday 25th July 2010 @ 1630 hrs

31 volunteers distributed 386 packets of food this evening.

This is the first time that Anila joined us on the rounds with Uncle Eddie. Oi Peng, Michael and Zoey helped with packing but did not join the rounds.

As it was raining, food packets were quickly distributed in the Greenhouse and Cardboard Boy areas so our clients would not have to wait too long in the rain. They were very cooperative, and did not rush or push for food.

We were pleasantly surprised in Greenhouse when a man approached us and handed us some money straight from his pocket (without even counting!) as a donation to Kechara Soup Kitchen. The amount donated was RM11; it seems he was very happy that we are distributing food to the poor.

We came upon a client who appeared to be very sad. He had just been informed by his sister that his mother passed away of old age about a year ago. He regretted that he would not see his mother again. Furthermore, it was his nephew’s wedding day but he was too ashamed to attend the dinner gathering because of all the problems he had caused when he was a drug addict. He was adamant that he would not be addicted to drugs again.; he said he is currently earning his living by selling recyclables and working as an illegal parking attendant.

Another regular client, Charlene, told us that she was very happy with her current job of collecting cardboard and recyclables. She rejected offers from neighbours to work in their shops because she prefers working independently.

Food distribution went on smoothly and ended at about 7pm without any untoward incidents.
