Distribution from our Soup Kitchen

Monday 23rd – Friday 27th May 2011 @ 1100 to 1300 hrs

A total of 637 packets of food were distributed from our soup kitchen this week. On average, 127 clients come in for food everyday. The slight increase in numbers was the result of newcomers.

One of our regular female clients, Nor Aishah, came to soup kitchen to greet volunteers. She told us that she only comes to the soup kitchen whenever she needs to do her laundry. Aishah, who sleeps at the Pudu Market area, cited the distance as the main hindrance for her to come for food every day. Aishah sells cardboard and recyclables everyday to make ends meet. Despite being female, she says she feels safe sleeping on the streets as she has been in the same situation for almost 10 years.

Distribution from our Mobile Soup Kitchen

Monday 23rd – Friday 27th May 2011 @ 1233 to 1430 hrs

We distributed 304 packets of food in Kampung Bellamy this week.

A few new faces were identified en route to Kampung Bellamy – the team stopped to give food to them, and directed them to our soup kitchen for further assistance during the week.

Mobile food distribution went smoothly throughout the week.

Midnight Rounds

Saturday 28th May 2011 @ 2130 hrs

76 volunteers distributed 673 packets of food to our clients tonight.

The Chow Kit Team, who were allocated 80 packets of food, found themselves short of food because there were 92 clients waiting for them at their regular stop. As a result, extra allocations from another team were brought over to Chow Kit.

Despite having made extra turns looking for their regular clients, Team Brickfields still ended up with an excess of food. During their rounds, they located a group of homeless people sleeping alongside a riverbank in the Petaling Street area. The clients said they had previously been sleeping in a building opposite the river, but had been chased away by the security guards.

The team also reported that they found some clients sleeping in a bus station. They chose the location because it was more cooling and comfortable to sleep on tiles, than on bricks and cement.

At Cahaya Suria, we found a young man who had just arrived in Kuala Lumpur looking for a job. He had bruises all over his hip and elbows as the result of a hit-and-run accident. Our volunteers gave him some ointment to relieve the pain.

Food distribution went smoothly and ended around 12:45am.

Evening Rounds

Sunday 29th May 2011 @ 1700 hrs

Seven volunteers distributed 68 packets in Brickfields and Petaling Jaya this evening.

Team Petaling Jaya found Guna after a two-week absence. He wept as he told our volunteers that he just received news of the passing of his wife. He and his wife had been staying in Gua Musang, Kelantan until Guna separated from her after an incident which Guna was reluctant to reveal. Guna said that his wife died of health problems.

The team failed to locate Syed. They went to the mosque where he used to sleep but the caretaker told our volunteers that Syed has not come back to sleep for a few weeks already.

The Brickfields team reported that Mr Tan’s condition has improved. The volunteers brought Mr Tan some clean clothes and soap. Mr Tan was not receptive to the volunteers’ suggestion of registering him into an old folks’ home. He is currently sharing a room with his friend, an arrangement that he insisted he prefers.

Food distribution went smoothly and ended around 6:45pm.
