Abandoned Siblings Off The Streets

Last Saturday, two siblings, aged 17 and 14, walked into Kechara Soup Kitchen’s centre in Jalan Imbi asking for second hand clothes. As our volunteer Yu Mi attended to them, they revealed to her that they had been abandoned by their mother after a family argument. They had been living under a tree at a bus station for two weeks now, waiting for their father to pick them up. Yu Mi and another volunteer Andy Tan took the siblings to a hypermarket to shop for basic necessities and a few items of clothing.

Following up, KSK’s project director Justin Cheah and Dr Valarmarthy Vaiyavari visited them at their makeshift spot at the bus station and spoke to them in more detail. Together, the two siblings agreed that the best option was to have Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat shelter them. JKM, under the Kementerian Pembangunan Wanita, Keluarga dan Masyarakat took the siblings into their care immediately. We would like to applaud them for their swift response.

As of reporting time, the two siblings were reunited with their aunt who had taken care of them when they were younger.
