All parents want the best for their children. So do CK Siah and Phoebe Yong, who love their son He Wei very much. He Wei is their first child, and before he was born, both CK and Phoebe participated in the weekly Chinese Setrap Puja held in Kechara House. They also participated in the 2011 Setrap Retreat, while Phoebe was 6-months pregnant with He Wei.

In November 2011, Phoebe was admitted into the hospital in preparation to deliver the baby. Upon completing her checkup, the doctor advised Phoebe to undergo an emergency caesarian as the baby had no detectable pulse, nor did Phoebe have any contractions. After receiving a distraught phone call, Pastor Yek Yee arrived at the hospital to perform a short prayer prior to Phoebe’s operation. Rinpoche also advised that a baby baptismal must be performed once the baby is a month old.

The caesarian was performed on 30 November 2011 at 10.30pm and He Wei was born on 1 December 2011, a healthy baby boy. Shortly thereafter, his parents noticed that He Wei would cry daily at midnight for no obvious reason and this continued for weeks. After consulting the pastors, CK placed a ruel beside He Wei, to protect him from any disturbances, and the midnight crying lessened.

After a month, CK and Phoebe requested the pastors to perform the baby baptismal for their son. After the ceremony, during which He Wei was placed under the protection of the Three Jewels, He Wei’s midnight crying lessened significantly and within few months, he had stopped crying. Since then, He Wei has been a happy, healthy little boy and is always in a jovial mood.

Interestingly, He Wei is exceptionally happy every time his parents bring him to Kechara. Unlike other children his age, He Wei is naturally very respectful of the Buddhas and Tsem Rinpoche, and will voluntarily make three full prostrations to Rinpoche’s throne every time he visits the gompa. This is very rarely seen from a three year old. He Wei also quickly picked up and memorised Setrap’s mantra and recites it daily.

Baby baptismal has really changed He Wei’s life tremendously. For a three year old child to recite mantras and do prostrations is one of the best gifts that parents can give to their children, keeping them blessed and protected by the Guru and the Three Jewels.

From a tender age, He Wei has been unusually attracted to Buddha statues. Here he is with Lama Tsongkhapa.
