Malaysia may not be snowy in November but that did not deter some Kechara fun-seekers from going for a round of ice-skating. Where you may ask? No, we didn’t have to go up to the mountains or fly off anywhere else…we were right here in town at the Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall! Sunway Pyramid is also where one of our Kechara Paradise dharma stores is situated. Kids and non-kids of the Manjushri Kids’ Class were feted to a treat at the ice-skating rink, courtesy of Sunway Pyramid.
Seasoned skaters like Khong Jean Ai (e-Division) and Han Ling (MKC teacher) were around to help first-timers on their first glides, which was not without many thrills and spills. Like life, nothing is easy at the beginning and we keep falling and failing until we get the hang of it one day. The idea is to not give up, or prefer to stay on the sidelines but to beef up our courage and try again, not letting the fear of failure or getting hurt prevent us from doing what we really want. Then the exhilaration of realising that we managed to do what we never thought we could pushes us on to the next level.
While it was way too early to expect the first-time ice-skaters to be doing a triple axel anytime soon, at least by the time the session was over, they managed to stay vertical and move about, though without the fancy footwork, and have fun while at it.
Manjushri Kids’ Class is Kechara House’s education initiative to promote Dharma and the attitudes of compassion, wisdom and universal responsibility amongst our children. Taught by enthusiastic volunteers, the class aims to give children a head start in their practice of the Six Paramitas, by teaching them generosity, ethics, patience, joyous effort, concentration and wisdom.
