It is a Tibetan custom to offer scarves (khata) to people whom we respect, like our Guru, elders, Buddha statues and monks. When we give a khata to our Guru, it is done to show we appreciate his kindness.

The khata should be given with folded hands near your forehead, with a humble bow, with head bent over and palms joined in respect.  In most cases you will receive your khata back and the Guru places it around your neck as a token of blessing to you.

You should cherish and keep that khata preciously as it is a very special blessing, talisman and protector from your Guru.
