Why do Buddhists set up altars?

Comments Off

When we have an altar and take care of it daily, we keep reminding ourselves to take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha every day.

Together with all the other practices that we do like prostrations, offerings and prayers, we remember to avoid doing things that are wrong and do things that are right.

When we do our prayers and sit in front of our altar, we can do our visualisation better while looking at the Buddha. Try doing your mantras without looking at the Buddha statue and see if your mind goes wandering. More often than not, you’ll be thinking of that chocolate cake waiting for you in the kitchen, that video game you were playing just now or your soft warm bed and feel real sleepy.

So you need some help and your altar can help you to concentrate.
