I wanted to know if I could be doing more meaningful joyous work to make my life worthwhile.

May Y Woo, 47
Manager, Kechara Paradise VIVA HOME

Before meeting H.E. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche and coming to Kechara, May Woo recalls that life was a revolving door of work and shopping, which she used to satisfy her creative needs. At work, she found herself in roles ranging from a Chartered Secretary specialising in administration and taxation, to a Sales Manager. Now, May brings her managerial expertise to her role as the Manager of Kechara Paradise Viva Home.

Life must be different now that you’re with Kechara. What was it like before you came to Kechara and what were you doing?

Before getting to know Kechara, I was just like any other person. Life was a cycle – go to work and, after work, go shopping. I would shop whenever there was an opportunity and recalling those times, I marvel at how frivolous and wasteful I was. There was no value in what I did and life lacked meaning.

So how were you introduced to Kechara? When did you start Dharma?

It started in October 2003 when I saw one of my clients wearing a beautiful Buddha pendant. From there, Liaison Henry Ooi introduced me to Kechara and to H.E. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche. It was only in August 2004 though, that I attended a Dharma talk given by Rinpoche in the newly-renovated Kechara House 1.

A pendant led you to Kechara? How fitting that you are an outlet manager now! Did you have any spiritual inclinations before Kechara? What sort of questions were you asking about life?

I had plenty of questions! I asked myself, “Is there life after death? Am I to do mundane activities until I reach my death bed? Is this all there is to life?” I wanted to know if I could be doing more meaningful joyous work to make my life worthwhile.

Since joining Kechara, you must have spent quite a lot of time with Rinpoche, and must have seen many things. What is it about Rinpoche that you like?

Since taking refuge with Rinpoche, I feel I have found my “mother and father” whom I will follow for the rest of my lives. I am amazed by Rinpoche’s untiring use of skilful means to benefit others. Rinpoche always ensures that his students and friends are cared for, and it has inspired me to emulate him.

What direction do you see Kechara taking in the future, and where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

I have no doubt that under Rinpoche’s guidance and with his blessings, Kechara will grow to benefit many. I will do all I can to help our retreat centre manifest and in five years’ time, I am sure we will be looking at a very busy and bustling centre! I wish to be there until the very last days of my life.
