Welcome to Kechara Lounge, our International Visitor Center! Kechara Lounge is located at one of the most sought-after locations in Kathmandu, overlooking the holy Boudhanath Stupa.
Situated on the first floor of a building in a quiet, cosy corner of Boudha, the Lounge hovers above the hustle and bustle of the city, just feet away from the famed sacred Stupa, one of Nepal’s most precious national treasures. Specially designed banners bearing Kechara’s logo and images of His Eminence hang from Kechara Lounge’s terracotta-coloured walls and can be seen from afar.
Simplicity is the soul of elegance inside Kechara Lounge. Upon entering, one is pleasantly greeted by the chic and modern furnishings. Tibetan benches with contemporary shades and furniture infused with the elements of traditional brocades form the interior design and concept of the Lounge. The fabric for the Lounge’s array of upholstery was sourced locally and Kechara’s friend, the talented master tailor Raj Kumar, sewed many of the brocade offerings. The light fixtures were specially chosen to shed both light and warmth in the Kathmandu cold wintery nights.
A ‘must-see’ inside the Lounge is the altar to Lama Tsongkhapa. An exquisite brocaded lama’s coat sewn by the talented Raj Kumar, drapes around this serenely beautiful sanctified figure. Surrounding Lama Tsongkhapa is an altar filled with a complete set of offerings, to educate those interested in learning how to set up an altar and behind him hangs a reproduction of the holy Setrap thangka that belongs to H.E. Tsem Rinpoche, which has shown miraculous signs in the past.
Beside the Tsongkhapa altar is the throne of H.E. Tsem Rinpoche. Authentic and traditional, the throne was especially set up and designed to explain what a Guru’s throne looks like and what it symbolises. His Eminence will also use this throne if he comes to Kechara Lounge to give teachings. Be sure not to miss this precious opportunity to attend Rinpoche’s Dharma talk in Kathmandu when it happens.
Inside Kechara Lounge, there resides its very own iconic ‘landmark’. It is the stunning five-foot Vajrayogini statue, adorned with hundreds of pearls threaded together in an artistic manner. Designed by Kechara Discovery, Vajrayogini’s image, stance and implements were made according to traditional scriptural sources, under H.E. Tsem Rinpoche’s guidance. The pearl offerings were specially designed by Kechara Saraswati Arts and by Kechara members Julia Tan and Lee Ho during a pilgrimage to Kathmandu in 2009. She is indeed a sight to behold.
In addition, there are suspended information panels and retail items for sale displayed in sleek glass cabinets. One can even purchase specialty items and exquisite artefacts that are sourced from everywhere else but Nepal. These unique items are supplied from other departments within the Kechara organisation exclusively for Kechara Lounge in Kathmandu.
The learning corner of Kechara Lounge comes fully equipped with flat screen television and comfortable seating, accentuated by brightly coloured throw cushions. This area is designed for people to hang-out and relax. One can choose to watch Rinpoche’s teachings on DVD, or read one of the many Dharma books authored by Rinpoche, all within the ease and convenience of modern amenities.
The walls of the Lounge are hung with framed photos of high lamas and attained masters, such as the Dalai Lama, H.H. Kyabje Zong Rinpoche and of course, H.E. Tsem Rinpoche, each telling a unique story from a moment in history. Visitors or pilgrims can also engage in their own meditations, prostrations and mantra recitations while taking in the spectacular views of the Stupa.
Two floors above Kechara Lounge is Paradise Cafe where guests are able to order a selection of food and beverages to be served in the Lounge itself. So, while one sips coffee or tea, and nibbles on snacks, one can enjoy the beautiful views of the Boudhanath Stupa through the many windows that line the walls of the lounge. To enable visitors stay connected to the world, WI FI facilities are also provided without charge.
Kechara Lounge is indeed the first of its kind in Boudha, if not the only! So, what are you waiting for? Book your next flight out to Kechara Lounge in Kathmandu and experience the timeless wonders of this spiritual place.
